![]() ![]() It's a fun destination, with lots to see on the way there and back. The drive is pretty, with mountain views the whole way. On the way back to SLC, we stopped at Antelope Island and, although the gnats were horrific and kept us in our car most of the time, we loved the scenery and seeing bison up close. The land art is a special destination for art fans, but the landscape is equally worthwhile to see. The landscape is desolate and beautiful, as are the lake views. Check out the oolitic sand it's made of tiny, perfectly round granules. This was a cloudy, intermittently rainy day and we had no issues with mud or salt caking on our shoes. It's interesting to see the pink tint and the salt crystals that have built up. ![]() You'll drive past the Golden Spike National Historic Site - stop in there, too. Walk out along the jetty to the center and then, if you like, continue out to the shoreline of the lake (maybe 10 minutes, a quarter of a mile presently). Astronomy Picture of the Day Discover the cosmos Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. Spiral Jetty is on the Great Salt Lake shoreline (or it was - the water is a distant memory now) accessed by a dirt road of about ten miles. At the site, you can walk up the hill and get a better view of the jetty, but you can also see it fine from the parking lot. The paved road continues and then turns to graded dirt, but any car can make it. I'll review that separately.Ĭontinuing north to Golden Spike National Historical Park, we arrived in time for their yearly anniversary featuring a reenactment of the joining of the Transcontinental Railroad, which was super fun, but I think it's interesting to go here any day. We started out at the Hill Aerospace Museum, only intending to stay an hour or so, but we ended up staying longer and could have stayed even longer. It took us a few trips to Utah to finally make it here, but it was worth it! We added a few things to the day trip, as well. ![]()
